Exhibition

COLOURS is conceived as a sound and video installation.

For its first stage of development, the installation is presented as a prototype for a Virtual Reality work. This VR prototype will be adapted and developed into a more plausible physical installation at the next stage of development.

The VR installation comprises four linked spaces: Sound Room, Talking Heads, Secret Places and Reflection Room. There is only one passageway to go to the next space. The audience can only go in one direction. At the tetrahedron-shaped fourth space, the audience can choose to exit the space or continue to the next passageway (not shown in the plans below) that will take them back to the Sound Room. This VR journey is conceived here as an infinite loop.

Sound Room

The journey begins in the oil storage tank-like Sound Room. The Sound Room is lit by natural light from a circular skylight. On the walls are 16 pairs of speakers, each playing back a different language recording of Colours.

Talking Heads

The Talking Heads room is a square room with four cinema screens on each wall. The Talking Heads videos are projected without audio on the 16 cinema screens.

Secret Places

Making their way down the uneven path of the Secret Places passageway, the audience encounter a holographic projection of Secret Places videos. Continuing their journey, the second holographic projection comprise images of different translations of Colours. After walking through the two holographic projections, the audience will see a green light source. Here, an overhead speaker will play back the audio recordings of Colours. The video, translated text and sound recording are not by the same participant but instead will be a mix of three different participants’ videos, texts and sound at any one time.

Reflection Room

The Reflection Room is a tetrahedron-shaped room with a hanging microphone and a video camera where audience can record their version of Colours. They can choose from the existing languages or record their own translations. The recordings will then be uploaded onto the installation’s system running the audio and video and will become new materials for the installation.

The audience can choose to leave the installation via the exit to the outdoor field.
